The Meihodo International Youth Visual Media Festival is an independent visual media festival sponsored by Meihodo, a Japanese corporation that supports young visual artists worldwide. The festival is an international event for the exhibition and selection of works by young photographers and short film makers from around the world.
The third annual festival is pleased to welcome Oscar winner Juliette Binoche as its Special Advisor and Guest of Honor. Binoche will be honored for her support of young filmmakers and short films, and celebrated as a champion for diversity in cinema.
Internationally renowned Chinese photographer and visual artist Chen Man will be Honorary Chairperson of the Jury for the third annual festival. The Honorary Chairperson of the Executive Committee is Emmy Award winner Yue-Sai Kan, a TV program host and film producer. Special Advisor is Oscar winner and Dean of Bard Conservatory of music Tan Dun, a composer and conductor known for such films as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. And Meihodo Co., Ltd. Chief Executive Su Qing serves as Chairman of the Organizing Committee.
The 3rd Annual Meihodo Festival features the theme “We Are In This Together–Unforgettable Moments of 2020,” which was designed to inspire submissions that reflect unity and resilience in the wake of a globally challenging year. The festival’s awards will be presented in Fukuoka on January 8, 2021 Japan time, and streamed live in the U.S. on YouTube at 3 p.m. EST / noon PST , January 7, 2021. It will also be simulcast on Tencent Video, the Chinese media giant that is co-presenting the festival, allowing users all over the world to view the ceremony and connect through art. The two previous festivals featured 663 short films from 12 countries including China, Japan, the United States and Vietnam. In all, a total of 68 entries have been awarded over ¥16 million ($150K) in prizes.
Founded in 2018, this annual festival was jointly created by Meihodo and the Beijing Film Academy of China. The festival is composed of three parts: themed visual works exhibition; an online discussion forum; and the evaluation and awards ceremony. It is authorized by Meihodo, and is organized and operated by the Executive Committee of the festival.
